Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a rare anomaly. Some small studies speculate that SIDS infants had at least one risk factor [for example, male gender, sleep position, bed sharing, or illness within a week of death]. SIDS deaths are all within the critical developmental period of the first year of life].

However, not every victim of SIDS has been autopsied for brainstem abnormalities. The study results are limited. Other studies suggest environmental causes can be a factor--everything from "sick" houses, to food allergies, to additives, to foam mattresses.
