"Victims Awarded Millions In Damages"

We see them on the news. The British Airlines 777 crash that landed short of Heathrow runway. The Turkish MD-83 that crashed with 56 aboard. The Tam Air crash in Sao Paulo that killed about two hundred. The Spanair MD-82 that crashed on its second takeoff run in Madrid, leaving fewer than twenty out of 172 alive. Latest Spanair Madrid Fatality August 23 2008

Planes crash. With thousands of flights daily, even if the statistics are low, accidents happen. Accidents can happen to anyone.

On 12 January 2008, Senator Barack Obama transferred from a flight from Nevada to a Gulfstream 2 in Chicago, Illinois. The aircraft Obama was a passenger in collided with another aircraft on the ground at Midway Airport. The left wingtip of the Gulfstream hit the right wingtip of a parked Cessna 208 aircraft. You can compare this to the fatal One-Two-Go Airlines incident in Phuket, Thailand where during the landing, the aircraft skidded off the runway, impacted several trees, and caught fire, killing least 89.

It is not surprising that fear of flying is a complex psychological issue that is of legitimate concern. There's no way to determine all the ways that people and aircraft can combine to produce wreckage and all the attendant human misery. It reminds me of the old question whether or not one is paranoid if someone is really after you.
