Aplastic Anemia is a terrible disease which is idiopathic
about half the time. Idiopathic covers any disease that
is of uncertain or unknown origin. For example, acute
idiopathic polyneuritis, diffuse idiopathic skeletal
hyperostosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, idiopathic
scoliosis, etc. In other words, the all-important
THEY have not yet figured out what caused it. The
word idiopathic comes from the New Latin idiopathia
(primary disease), from the Greek idiopatheia, from
idio-, from idios (one's own, personal) + -patheia,
-pathic (feeling, suffering). It is an appropriate
etymology since AA is truly a curse. It was more of a
curse before we were able to manage bone marrow
transplants--but there is no guarantee that everyone will
find a donor. Now there is even more help to be found in
stem cell research. So the prospects of this disease are
becoming brighter all of the time.
